LSC Update - August 2017


As summer vacation ends and we all gear up for another school year, the Hawthorne LSC would like to introduce our interim Principal and Assistant Principal. Marisol Negron is a familiar face and will step up from Assistant Principal to Interim Principal for the 2017-2018 school year. Marisol has been with us as an administrator for the last few years after a long career as a CPS educator. Our Interim Assistant Principal is Liz Wontor-Leach. Liz is joining us from Pulaski International School of Chicago where she was Assistant Principal and has prior experience teaching Fine Arts.

As most of you know, the reason for these changes is that our former principal, Nathan Pietrini, left Hawthorne for a new position running a non-profit this summer. CPS, based in part on Mr. Pietrini's recommendation, offered our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Negron, the position of Interim Principal. Mrs. Negron accepted and will be Hawthorne's Interim Principal through the school year. This position carries a term of one year and CPS expects that in that time, the Hawthorne LSC will secure a permanent school principal. Conducting this search is one of the core responsibilities of the HSA LSC.

Since Mr. Pietrini notified us of his departure, the HSA LSC has taken the following steps:


1. Conducted training and review for the HSA LSC with CPS resources regarding principal selection.
2. Decided that the HSA LSC will conduct the search and constitute the selection committee. The HSA LSC may reach our informally to members of the community to assist in the process.
3. Developed a timeline for principal selection that will include a significant opportunity for parent, staff and faculty input. This timeline anticipates posting for the position in October, conducting resume review and interviews during late fall and early winter culminating in principal selection in early spring 2018.

The community will shortly receive a survey the HSA LSC will use to solicit feedback on community priorities as they relate to this principal search. The first LSC meeting will be conducted in the auditorium on September 12th and will provide an opportunity for community members to discuss the process and provide comment. We are very pleased that Ms. Negron agreed to participate in this selection process as a candidate for the position.


The HSA LSC expects and is very open to comments and questions regarding these announcements. We are excited for another great year at Hawthorne. Welcome back!

THANK YOU to UPS


Kevin at the 3023 N. Clark St. UPS store was so helpful and UPS donated the shipping costs for the books collected at the Fall Literacy Festival. Eight boxes were shipped to Mitchell Elementary School in Houston, TX!

This year the PTA is putting together holiday cookie boxes for each and every person working at Hawthorne!  

We need your help!  We are asking for each baker to:
(1) Bake and provide 2 dozen cookies in a disposable container;
(2) Drop them off in the North Basement on Thursday,
