What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)? Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children develop awareness and management of their emotions, set and achieve important personal and academic goals, use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrate decision making and responsible behaviors to achieve school and life success. There is a strong research base indicating that these SEL competencies improve students’ social/emotional development, readiness to learn, classroom behavior, and academic performance Hawthorne has made this a cornerstone issue this school year. Look for events and programs throughout the year. Join us on Wednesday, Nov. 9th, 7- 8:30 pm in the auditorium, for a free workshop led by Bobbie Gordon. This evening will kick- off this year’s Speaker Series and highlight activities taking place at Hawthorne during National Anti-Bullying Week, November 15- 19th. Ms. Gordon has developed workshops for parents and children on the effects peer abuse has on those targeted, the children who exhibit the bullying behavior and those who observe the abusive behavior. Nov. 10th , SEL Parent’s Advisory Committee Meeting – 9:00 am North Basement All parents who want to learn more about SEL or be involved in SEL related programming should attend. |
