The RYH website (www.ilraiseyourhand.org) will be updated regularly and is a good place to remain informed this summer. We will also do our best to keep our own website current. Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education ! Update: MAY 4th, 2010 Thank you to all the Hawthorne families who attended the Raise Your Hand Rally at Lane Tech yesterday. As many of you know, Illinois ranks an embarrassing 49th in the nation for education funding. Unfortunately, the economy has hindered school funding reform and it appears unlikely that any revenue enhancement bill will pass the House prior to the Fall elections. And now with the Illinois budget crisis, we face the prospect of further cuts! Hawthorne is part of a new coalition of CPS schools called the Raise Your Hand Coalition whose immediate goal is to influence the General Assembly & Governor Quinn to pass a FY2011 budget which maintains last year's funding levels. With legislators scheduled to adjourn May 7th, it's critical that we keep the pressure on until a responsible revenue-and-spending plan is approved. Here's how you can help: 1. Anyone can attend the May 5th "Lobby Day" in Springfield, IL The RYH coalition will be sending representatives from CPS schools to Springfield this Wednesday, May 5th. Mrs. Alvarado would like representation from the Hawthorne community. Coach buses will be provided by CPS -- departing Audubon Elementary School (3500 N. Hoyne) at 6:30 am on Wednesday and returning the same day. The group will be talking to legislators and are seeking a meeting with the Governor. If you can participate, please email Lauri Schwegel (

2. THIS WEEK, please visit http://www.noto37.org to e-mail Governor Quinn & other key Illinois legislators to ask for appropriate and sustained state funding for public education. Ask Governor Quinn to not allow the General Assembly of the State of Illinois to adjourn before they enact a responsible solution to the public education funding crisis and to veto any budget which cuts education funding. The site does all the work for you. It finds your elected officials, gives you a pre-written letter that you can edit if you wish, and sends the e-mail -- all in about 60 seconds! Over 90,000 emails and contacts have gone out since RYH organized 2 weeks ago. But the next few days are critical. We are asking our entire Hawthorne community (teachers parents and students) to PLEASE visit www.noto37.org this week if you have not already done so; it takes 60 seconds of your time to say no to funding cuts. Let's join our fellow CPS community in sending a strong message to our legislators before they adjourn Friday. We must ALL take a stand for our classrooms & teachers! Ask your neighbors, friends and family to do the same. |
